After Fighting Mother Nature - Racing Returns to Marshalltown Speedway

May 4, 2011

After fighting Mother Nature the past 2 weeks, that problem was solved as racing resumed on the famed high banks at Marshalltown Speedway.  There were 109 cars signed in to do battle on Johnny Ray's Sports Bar & Grille Night at the Races.

In the O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites 15 lap feature, before 1 lap was in the books, the caution would come out for Chase Ellingson coming to a rest on the front stretch. On the restart it was Dusty Masolini taking control and leading the first 2 laps, but on lap 3, Masolini would have to battle with Josh May, with May winning that battle and taking the lead. Shortly after that the caution came out for a 2nd time, this time for Michael Parcel coming to a stop in turn 2. May would resume command but the field would see another caution on lap 5 when Tim Hennigar lost the handle in turn 2. May wouldn't let them bother him as he would only have to worry about lap traffic. May took the win with Mike Morrill in 2nd, Joel Huggins in 3rd, Andy Hennigar in 4th and Randy Bryan in 5th.

The Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods were up next. It took 4 heats and a B-feature to bring the field down from 31 cars to 24 for the feature. Nick Roberts led lap 1 but Racer Hulin took over the lead on lap 2. Hulin would continue to hold the top spot until Roberts made the pass for the lead. Roberts would hold that spot until Jake Strayer took the top spot. The only caution in the 15 lap feature came out on lap 9 for Zac Backer coming to a stop in turn 2. Strayer would not let that bother him as he took the win with Joel Rust, Racer Hulin, Cayden Carter and Austin Lucas rounding out the top 5.

The Mike's Hard Lemonade IMCA Stock Cars A-feature would not disappoint anyone. Jay Schmidt took the early lead and had started to pull away. Schmidt had the lead, but Steve Meyer and Trent Murphy were right behind him. Schmidt held the lead until losing the handle which allowed Trent Murphy to get by. Caution came out on lap 10 for a couple of cars sitting in turn 2. Murphy and Meyer began to battle for the top spot when the race resumed and it was too close to call every lap. As the white flag came out a car would come to a rest in turn 2 and this brought out the final caution, meaning the feature would go 19 laps instead of scheduled 18. When all was and done, Trent Murphy took the win, Steve Meyer was 2nd, Tracy Gienger was 3rd, Damon Murty was 4th and Michael Jaennette was 5th.

The Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds also did not disappoint the fans, entertaining them with an exciting 20 lap feature. Todd Conrad took the lead and looked to be pulling away before the only race caution came out on lap 7 caused be a car running off the top of turn 1. Conrad had Richie Gustin, Jimmy Gustin and Adam Larson sitting right behind him. Larson had an impressive run as he started 14th and was up to 4th in only 7 laps. Jimmy Gustin had a great restart and made the pass for the lead on lap 9. Jimmy Gustin’s lead wouldn't last long as Larson made the pass for the lead on lap 12 and went on to take the win, Jimmy Gustin was 2nd, Richie Gustin was 3rd, Todd Conrad was 4th and Jon Snyder was 5th.

The final feature was the IMCA Hobby Stocks for 12 laps and it was Mike Vibbard leading the first 5 laps but Eric Knutson made a pass for the lead on lap 6. Knutson”s lead was short lived as he was passed by Michael Murphy. Murphy and Knutson battled for the lead with Knutson regaining the lead on lap 11. After that happened, a caution came out for a car coming to a rest in turn 2. On the late race restart, Knutson would not be denied as he would go on to take the win, Murphy, Vibbard, Kevin Fee and Matt Hedspeth rounding out the top 5.
