Anniversary Wins to Laney and Carter, Corn Belt Clash to Rafferty

MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA (May 23rd, 2025)

Following an off week at America’s Bucket List Track, six regular IMCA classes with over 149 total cars checked in at Marshalltown Speedway. It was also night one of three for the IMCA STARS Modlites Corn Belt Clash. Also on tap was the 46th anniversary event for the IMCA Modifieds and the 20th anniversary event for the IMCA Northern SportMods.

First to take the track were the IMCA Stock Cars presented by Knight Sanitation, with 20 laps being the distance. Boone, Iowa, native Josalyn Elmquist was on the pole, and to her outside was the A1A of Austin Kaplan. Last week's feature winner, Jimmy Gustin, would lead the first lap, but the caution would fly with just one lap scored. Kaplan would get a big run off the top of turns three and four to take the lead with 13 laps to go. John Oliver Jr. overtook Gustin for second and set his sights on the A1A machine. With a handful of laps left, it was still Kaplan leading. A caution would fly with four laps to go, reracking the field. Kaplan, Oliver Jr., and Cayden Carter were nose to nose battling it out for track position. Oliver Jr. would pass Kaplan in turns one and two to grab the lead, but a lap car prevented Oliver Jr. from winning as Kaplan would hang on for the win. Cayden Carter, Maguire DeJong, and Michael Jaennette rounded out the top five.

Following a nail-biting finish in the Stock Car feature, it was time for the Mod Lites presented by Drury Automotive to clash in night one of the Corn Belt Clash with 20 laps the scheduled distance. Tyler Gray, all the way from Royal Palm Beach, Florida, was on the pole with Dillon Raffurty staring to his outside. Raffurty would lead lap one after not scoring a lap in the first try due to a caution. Raffurty had a half a straightaway lead with eights to go, but that lead would be erased as a caution wouldy, re-racking the field side by side. Just two laps later, another caution would fly. Raffuarty would secure the win during night one of the Corn Belt Clash. Brandon Freeburg, Colby Orberembt, Austin Gray, and Bryan Zhem rounded out the top five.

It was time for the IMCA Sport Compact 15 lap feature presented by Hy-Vee. Kaiden Gosselink and Ryan Cheney led the field to the green flag. Mitchell Bunch, who started 3rd, would lead lap one. A caution would flag with just one lap scored. Bunch and Christian Grady battled it out for the lead for multiple laps before Grady would take the lead with three laps to go. Grady would secure his first win at Marshalltown this season; track point leader Spencer Roggentien would take second place. Cowyn Whisler, Luke Fraise, and Campbell Tressler rounded out the top five.

It was time for the 20th anniversary event for the IMCA Northern SportMods presented by Rugged Radios. 20 laps was the scheduled distance. The 198 machine of Sam Wieben was on the pull, and Brayton Carter out of Oskaloosa, Iowa, started on his outside. Carter would lead lap one. Carter would dominate the 20-lap feature with over a 1.5-second lead over David Schwartz, but a late caution with three laps to go would erase Carter's lead, but Speed Bray would hold on to secure his 4th win at Marshalltown Speedway this season and win the 20th anniversary event at the High Banks. Kyle Olson would finish second after second-place finisher David Schwartz would be disqualified. Will Wolf, Daniel Harris, and Sam Wieben rounded out the top five.

Following the 20th anniversary event for the IMCA Northern SportMods, it was time for the 46th anniversary event for the IMCA Modifieds presented by Tire Demon by Love Tap. Tom Berry Jr., a Marshalltown, Iowa, native, would start on the pole of the 25-lap feature with Ankeny, Iowa, native Riley Simmons starting to Berry’s outside. The 11X machine of Tom Berry Jr. would lead lap one. Berry Jr. would lead the first 14 laps before a caution would fly with 11 laps to go. Cody Laney would use the top side of turns one and two to take the lead with ten laps to go. Laney and Berry Jr. would battle it out, throwing sliders and blocking runs, but a late caution would fly with three laps to go. Cody Laney would hold off Tom Berry Jr. to secure the win in the 46th anniversary event for the IMCA Modifieds.

It was time for a nightcap as the IMCA Hobby Stocks presented by Big 8 Tyre Center geared up to go 16 laps. Mother Nature was spitting rain throughout the course of this one. Dustin Filloon and Jeremy Dooley lead the field to the green flag. Some slippery track conditions caused multiple cautions during the course of the nightcap. Kevin Sather, an Ankeny, Iowa native who started dead last (27th), worked his way up to first to secure the nightcap win and is going for a plus 26. Dustin Filloon, Sam West, Eric Stanton, and Solomon Bennett rounded out the top five.

Next week is another great week at the America’s bucket list track with all six regular classes once again on tap. It will also be RBF Electric/Mid States Boring $1,000.00 to win IMCA Hobby Stocks. Pits open at 5:15, grandstands opening at 5:30 with hot laps beginning at 6:30. Be sure to follow along on our social media channels and at marshalltownspeedway.com.
